This Decennial Digest provides an accurate, comprehensive and dependable source for the entire Supreme Court case law for the period 1981-1990, during which there has been tremendous growth. While many new issues came before the Supreme Court for its final verdict, the earlier rulings were reviewed and revised in the light of changed circumstances and situations - an aspect that can be better appreciated with the entire 10-year case law before you in one place.
Each case has been thoroughly analysed and all the rulings extracted for which it is a binding authority under the constitutional mandate of Article 141 of the Constitution of India.
The arrangement and plan of this Decennial Digest has been designed to enable the reader reach the relevant rulings most conveniently by whatever route he may begin his search for the relevant rulings, be it the Topic approach, Statute approach or the Case-method approach.
While case-law under major statutes has been digested under their own statutory titles, in many areas the topic approach has been adopted, especially where a large number of statutes deal with the same subject such as under Administrative Law, Cooperative Societies, Criminal Trial, Debt Laws, Education, Excise, Forests, Income-Tax, Labour Laws, Land Acquisition, Municipalities, Preventive Detention, Rent Control and Eviction, Sales Tax, Service Law, Tenancy and Land Laws, Town Planning, Universities, etc.
The Statute approach is also fully operative through the elaborate cross-references system which pin-points the exact topic and sub-topic headings thereby making available other relevant rulings also under other related Statutes.
The new case-method approach enables the reader to reach all the related and latest rulings from any earlier known ruling. The Table of Cases Digested cum Noter-up also includes all the Supreme Court cases since 1950, which have been cited in the various cases during 1981-1990, and also in the cases of the years 1991-1993 and below each case are given the references of the cases, where it is cited alongwith the treatment, such as followed, distinguished, explained or overruled. The noter-up covers the cases of 1981-93 also and so the process can be repeated for each of the cases of 1981-93 themselves. The case-method also brings out vital information regarding the strength of any case revealed by the treatment received in the later cases such as followed, distinguished, overruled, reversed, etc.
The Table of Cases Cited (non-SC) includes all the remaining cited cases of the Privy Council, Federal Court, High Courts and foreign cases. Again from any of these cases, if known and cited, by the case-method approach, one can reach the relevant Supreme Court cases. This table also incorporates for the non-SC cases, treatment such as approved, affirmed, followed, overruled and reversed, etc. The case-method approach is reinforced by the annotations and editorial notes below the digest notes.
