Overview:

This book is a reflection on a life spent in and around the law - at the Bar, on the Bench, and in the world of ideas that shape judicial thought.

Across ten chapters, it speaks to law students, young lawyers, judges, and thoughtful readers alike. It explores preparation for the legal profession, advocacy, judging, judicial reform, emergency provisions, law and history, lessons beyond the law, and the art of public speaking.

Written with clarity and insight, the book views law not merely as a profession but as a disciplined way of thinking about life and society.

About the Author:

Justice Yatindra Singh graduated in Science with distinction from the University of Allahabad in 1970, securing sixth place on the merit list. He was the recipient of both Merit and National Scholarships, and joined the Bar in 1973 after obtaining his law degree.

A distinguished sportsman in his youth, he represented Uttar Pradesh in Table Tennis and served as champion and captain of the Allahabad University teams in Table Tennis and Squash.

He was appointed Judge of the Allahabad High Court in 1999 and subsequently became Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court in 2012, retiring in 2014. Known for clarity of thought and expression, he pioneered the writing of judgments in plain and accessible language, and championed a new approach to writing them so as to make them more easily understood by all. He also introduced the use of open-source software in the judiciary.

Justice Singh has authored several books, including A Lawyer's World and Childhood Dreams, Information Technology Law (formerly titled Cyberlaws), and Musings of a Judge. He currently practises as a Senior Advocate before the Supreme Court of India.
