The Legacy of the Syrian Ba'ath Party - A Study of Human Rights Violations, Gender Inequality and Forced Displacement in the Syrian Arab Republic

The war in Syria caused over 470,000 victims, over 7 million internally displaced people and over 5 million refugees. The Syrian Ba'ath party also bears responsibility to a certain extent for the campaign of mass rape by Assad's soldiers during the civil war, which was perniciously effective in both oppressing communities and provoking defections to the loosely formed Free Syrian Army. Hence the Syrian Ba'ath party - and its leader Bashar al-Assad - must make it into a priority to bring offenders of sexual violence to justice; and also commit themselves to raise awareness about empowering women to combat sexual violence: so that human rights, gender equality and the rule of law can finally be manifested in Syria. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Syria, so that a just social peace can be manifested in the country. Social challenges - such as civil unrest, military dictatorship and social inequality - are also explored in this work.
