In the earlier times the regulation of people,s use of forests was through local customs. These customarily regulated practices were for the first time restrained by enactment of the Forest Act, 1865. Private forests, however, kept out of this. The forest Act of 1878 increased the government control over the forests and provided cedrtain provisions for the private forests also. Activities that amounted to forest offences were listed and penalties prescribed.
A comprehensive Indian Forest Act 1927 codified all the activities of the Forest Department and prescribed the manner and limits within which forest resources could be exposed to explotation. Subsequently, through the Government of India Act of 1955 the subject to forest was included in the provincial list. Thereafter several states enacted their own laws wishin the framework of 1927 Act to deal with specific situations. Wasteful denudation of forests over the years, however, exposed to be an inadequacies of the forests Acts. this encyclopadeia is expected to be an indispensable companion for the Bench and the Bar, Forest Department, Environment Department, Police Department and all concerned with the subject.
