The Dock Workers (Regulation of Employement) Act, 1948 provides for regulationg the employment of dock workers. Provisions may be made by a scheme for the registration of dock workers and employers with a view to ensuring greater regularity of employment and for regulating the employment of dock workers, whether registered or not, in a port.
This is an Act to give effect to the convention concerning the protection against accidents of workers employed in loading and unloading of ship. The Central Government may, by notification in the official Gazeete, appoint such persons as is thinks fit to be inspectors for the purposes of this Act within such local limits as it may assign to them respectively. Every Inspector shall be deemed to be a public servant within the meaning of the Indian Penal Code and shall be officially subordinate to such authority as the Central Government may direct. The punishment for wilfully obstructing an Inspector in the exercise of any power under Sec.4 of the Act may consist of fine up to five hundred rupees.
The Dock Workers (Safety,Health And Welfare) Scheme,1961 made under SEc. 4 of the Dock Workers (Regulation of Employment) Act,1948 (No. 9 of 1948) shall bee deemed to be regulations framed under Act 54 of 1986 and shall be in force unless they are altered or repealed under this Act.
