Overview:

Justice at Heart: Life Journey of Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer by Salman Khurshid and Dr. Lokendra Malik is the story of a crusader against injustice, a legendary judge who lived and worked for social justice for the people of India. Justice Krishna Iyer was a towering and a multifaceted personality having a varied experience of life. He has inspired many persons by his philosophy of life, and his insatiable hunger for socio-economic justice. An ardent advocate of change for better, a person with simple habits, he was a friend of all.

If one has to sum up in one sentence this incredible personality one would simply say that he too wrote the Constitution through his judicial pronouncements enriching it immensely and indeed explicating the intent and aspiration of the noble framers, making it truly a living document of our nationhood. The work will be a welcome addition to any library.

"Some people see things as they are and ask why, I dream things as they should be and ask why not"

- Robert Kennedy

The thought-provoking masterpiece Equal Justice and Forensic Process: Truth and Myth by V.R. Krishna Iyer contain lectures delivered by the learned author to commemorate the memory of Swamy Ramanand Teerth, the great freedom fighter who always revolted against injustice. Democratic Legality, in its processional egalite, is the focus of these lectures.

The learned author in his lectures has focused on forensic realism and its shortfall vis-a-vis social justice. He is a firm believer in the fact that the ultimate user of justice is the common man, in millions, and not the millionaires. His lectures, based on opinions of eminent scholars, judges, jurists, writers, and leaders and enriched by his own original thinking and critical analysis cover a vast canvas of the judicial process, its shortcomings, and also ways of reformation.

Justice Krishna Iyer forcefully advocates a thorough overhaul of the legal system, which as he says, inflicts unlimited injustices upon the numerous voiceless illiterate masses of India. He emphasizes greatly the commitment of the judges to the concept of social and equal justice embedded in the preamble, Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles of the Constitution of India.

This substantial prolific and forceful work can be counted as a classical masterpiece of jurisprudential literature. The book will be immensely useful to legal scholars, jurists, administrators, students of the judicial process, law reformers politicians, and judges and a must in every library.

This masterly work by an eminent thinker of law is a stimulating collection of essays on the Constitution of India.

Our 'Constitution', the author emphasizes, is a great document 'whose meaning is so dynamic that new dimensions unfold themselves as time passes and zigzag developments overtake society'. The ongoing research and investigation into the meaning and impact of its provisions, brings forth fresh interpretations in the light of social change. This dynamic nature of the Constitution and the author's response to these novel socio-economic and jural metamorphoses have been expressed in the shape of articles constituting this work which have been updated in thought and have assumed new shape. Four fresh new articles have been added to the work, viz. 1. Basic Structure Doctrine and Constitutional Governance, 2. Totalitarian Treaty Power and Constitutional Control Jurisprudence, 3. Constitutionally Inscribed Social Justice and Operationally Opposite Agenda in Practice, 4. Judiciary-A Reform Agenda. The earlier 10 articles have been reviewed and updated where necessary.

An indispensable work for scholars of Constitutional Law, lawyers, judges and the law teachers.

Justice Krishna Iyer was a great proponent of social justice. The book presents three lectures delivered by the author under the auspices of the Sulkhani Devi Mahajan Trust.

  • Lecture 1- Some Half-hidden Aspects of Indian Social Justice;
  • Lecture 2 - Social Justice v. Soft Justice: A Systemic Syndrome;
  • Lecture 3 - Untouchability and Social Justice.

Justice Krishna Iyer was a great proponent of social justice. In these lectures he makes an impassioned plea for social justice for India's poor millions who he says have been denied social justice by the three great wings of the government - the Executive, the Judiciary and the Parliament.

A prolific writer, Justice Krishna Iyer is known for his hard-hitting but eloquent lectures and writings. First published under the title, "Social Half Hidden Aspects of Indian Social Justice", the book was later enlarged and two new chapters were added.

The current reprint comes with a new layout along with a Table of Cases and Subject Index.
