The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 was enforced in the whole of India with effect from 14th November, 1985. Narcotic Drugs means Coca leaf, Cannabis (hemp), opium, poppy straw including all manufactured drugs. Psychotropic Substances means any Substances, natural or Synthetic or any natural material or any salt or preparation of such substance or material included in the list of psychotropic substances.
The Act is a Special Law and has a laudable purpose to serve and is intended to combat the menace otherwise bent upon destroying the public health and national wealth. The provisions have been made more rigorous as a result of amendment in 1989.
