Overview:

This standard work has been thoroughly revised and rewritten in view of the exhaustive amendments brought about in the Act by the Central Act No. 44 of 1986 which came into force on January 26, 1987.

The original Act, Suppression of Immoral Traffic in Women and Girls Act, had failed to effectively curb the evil of prostitution and more stringent measures were called for, as also the scope of the Act needed to be enlarged.

Thus, recent amendments provide for (a) enhancement of penalties for offences especially those involving children and minors; (b) cancellation of licences of hotels, etc. where children or minors have been found involved in prostitution; (c) enhancement of punishment for seduction in custody; (d) deletion of Sections 10 and 12; (e) compulsory medical examination of all persons recovered from a brothel; (f) interrogation of recovered women and girls by women police officers or in presence of women social workers; (g) appointment of special trafficking police officers and establishment of special courts for inter-state trafficking and (h) extension of the Act to cover all persons female or male who are exploited sexually for commercial purposes and the consequent amendment of the title of the Act.

Several notifications, amending and supplementing the earlier ones, have been noticed and included in this edition. The Appendices contain the Rules made by different States under the Act.
