Overview:

Most of us will never have to seek legal advice for murder or kidnapping.  But at some point in our lives, we are all faced with a conflict of interest.  When does a conflict cross the line to become a corruption offence? This book, written for both lawyers and lay persons, seeks to answer that question through an exploration of each of the elements of the offence: (a) accepting or giving a bribe (b) as an inducement or reward (c) to do something that is objectively corrupt (d) with guilty knowledge.

Now into its second edition, the new Law of Corruption in Singapore covers developments since 2007.  Highlights include:

  • an analysis of the celebrated trio of sexual gratification cases involving senior civil servants and academics
  • the use of corporate structures to receive financial gratifications
  • the interplay between the new Criminal Procedure Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act, especially when it comes to the interviewing of suspects by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau
  • the use of middlemen to give bribes
  • the expanded powers of seizure for unexplained wealth under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Serious Offences Act.
